Lei uala, the sweet potato lei, is used in lāʻau lapaʻau to help a new mother make more milk. The lei is made in the wili style and nīpuʻu style, similar to maile, from sweet potato vines, and worn open.
The milky vines are stroked on the breasts to encourage them to likewise provide milk. Uala greens and tubers are cooked and eaten by the mother.
